Current Projects

Regardless that nobody has posted anything here in the past few months, I do have something to post.

So I am still in school at Penn College with 3 semesters left, including the one I am currently in. I have been keeping pretty damn busy with school. Right now I am working on two major projects. One is actually my senior project, while the other is something that I am doing just for fun.

First project: LED Matrix.

So I am creating an LED matrix. What is that you ask? It is pretty much an arrangement of LED's (Light Emitting Diodes), that I am going to be controlling through either an Arduino board, an HC12 Mircroprocessor board, or a Basys FPGA Board. Not sure which one yet, however I am going to start out with the arduino. I am looking into converting that code into VHDL to use the basys board, but that might be quite difficult. Anyways, What I am going to do is use the board to control what is displayed on the LED Matrix. I am going to start off with a scrolling message, and then maybe afterwards go to some sort of patterns. I plan on making an 8x32 LED matrix. Should be alot of fun, and alot of soldering.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

400 : Clear LED's :: Color Red
5 : 74595 Shift Register IC Chips
5 : 4017 Decade Counter Chips
3 Perfboards

Received!

*Edit to plans, I laid it out on the perfboard, and I am going to do 24 x 8 for the LED Matrix. Should look Great once I finish!
..... Soooo much soldering....................

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Project 2: eDash: Virtual Dash board using the OBDII port for realtime data

So yea, this one is my senior project. I am going to make a touchscreen OBD II scanner. It's going to be Great! So I plan on using a touchscreen display, a 32 bit PIC microprocessor, and a few other components along with a chip called the microOBD 200 chip. This is all going to be set up, so that you can actually use this as a dash board while driving your car. You will be able to watch your RPM's, Speed, Mass Air Flow, it will do basic fuel economy, and a few other functions, like being able to check your engine codes. It is going to be alot of work also, but once it's done, I am going to be extremely happy. As I said before, this is my senior project, so I plan on have great documentation, as well as alot of photos of the project. Once all Is said and done, I will try to share it all with you guys. Whom ever is still here that is.

How do you use 1Gbps Internet links? Chattanooga residents find out

Quote

How do you use 1Gbps Internet links? Chattanooga residents find out

Google is bringing 1Gbps fiber connections to Kansas City, Kansas next year—but what can Kansans expect when the fiber arrives? Chattanooga, Tennesse provides a partial answer.

As the first US city to make 1Gbps fiber connections available to all, Chattanooga has been on the cutting edge of broadband deployment. Even fiber's backers admit there aren't many uses for a full 1Gbps connection at the moment, but they make a "build it and they will come" argument; provide the bandwidth and uses will materialize. Besides, once you've laid the fiber—why not roll out 1Gbps service?

Chattanooga's fiber network currently covers all 600 square miles serviced by the community-owned Electric Power Board (EPB), which has also provided electricity for decades. EPB rolled out a 1Gbps upgrade to the network last fall, but it "hasn't been flooded with calls" for the service, says David Wade, Chief Operating Officer of EPB.

Indeed, even this may be overstating current demand; only 6 or 7 Chattanooga residents and "several businesses" have ordered the high-end service, which launched with a $350 per month price tag.

David Wade Those who have ordered face challenges; if they want to experience the full 1Gbps speed they're paying for, standard WiFi connections aren't fast enough. Some customers have switched to wired gigabit routers in order to access their full bandwidth.

This doesn't particularly concern Wade. "We knew that the capacity had to be there before people could start creating applications that could utilize the capacity," he told me. "It's like bringing electricity to the Tennessee Valley" in the early twentieth century, he said. (EPB was founded in 1935.) Before power arrived, there were limited applications for it, but stringing power lines to every home and businesses provided a huge boost to the local economy and spurred all kinds of additional use. Just as with electrification, EPB has decided to run fiber to every home and business, including the third of its customers outside the city, because the benefits of fiber connections don't decline with population density.

This costs more, but EPB is a beneficiary. It uses the fiber to power its own "smart grid" electrical program, and deploying the program everywhere adds value to the electrical system. But once the fiber's in place, it can be used for TV, Internet, and phone service without digging any new trenches; indeed, even upgrading the entire network to support 1Gbps service was relatively inexpensive, since it only required an electronics upgrade at central locations. While few customers buy the 1Gbps tier, many use slower EPB Internet services, but at least the network is ready for the future at relatively minimal cost.

Cost drops over time, too. Wade noted that the optical network terminals—the boxes of homes and businesses that terminate a fiber connection and make it available to the home network—only supported 400Mbps speeds when Chattanooga began deploying them. Less than two years later, optical network terminals now reach gigabit speeds but cost less than the previous versions.

Network speeds are real—if you pay for 30Mbps, you get 30Mbps—and are symmetrical (the same speed in both directions). Chattanooga has also seen surprising use of its upstream connections, even though some question just how much uploading customers want to do. "If you're limiting upstream traffic, you're not going to see upstream traffic," Wade counters.

"A gig" has been good marketing for Chattanooga That attitude extends to all aspects of the network; build it for the future, not the present, and then encourage people to grow new applications that take advantage of abundance rather than conform to scarcity. (EPB has no caps on home Internet use.) To do this, EPB has signed on a sponsor of local business incubator Lamp Post Lab, which will bring undergrads to Chattanooga this summer in a coding competition designed to find the best uses for massive bandwidth. The winner gets $50,000 to turn their idea into a business.

The contest encourages people to "Come to Lamp Post Lab, build a company and maybe even change the world." That's exactly what Chattanooga wants to hear, and the city has been trumpeting its recent inclusion in a list of the world's "seven most intelligent communities." (Only two other US cities made the cut.)

"If we open the door to allow smart people to be smart, they usually take advantage of it," says Wade. He's in for a bit of competition; soon, Kansas City residents will be able to take advantage, too, and Google has already said it will work aggressively to develop new uses of its own for bigger bandwidth.

(If not, a particularly low-quality recording is embedded below.) On that show, Jeremy Clarkson could be seen flogging one around the track, complaining about a range of only 55 miles before showing that car being pushed into the garage, supposedly out of charge. Not true, says Tesla, who has filed a lawsuit against the BBC for libel and malicious falsehood. Tesla claims that, among other things, two cars were provided and at all times at least one of them was ready and willing. Beyond that, Tesla knows that neither car ever dropped below 25 percent charge, meaning the whole pushing into the garage thing was, well, staged. It's hard to look at this as much more than a PR move, Tesla waiting over two years to file, but that doesn't mean the complaint isn't legit. Now it's time for the Beeb to roll out its crew of tame racing lawyers. Some say their suits are made of wool, and that their briefcases contain actual briefs. All we know is they're very well compensated.

Update: Well, the hornets' nest has been kicked, and it didn't take long for the swarm to arise.
Why do they drive on the Left in Britian?

WHY IN BRITAIN DO WE DRIVE ON THE LEFT?

About a quarter of the world drives on the left, and the countries that do are mostly old British colonies.
Japan also drive on the leftclick here for this explanation.

This strange quirk perplexes the rest of the world; however, there is a perfectly good reason.

Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal, violent societies of mostly right-handed people.

Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.

Quick Links
Lower driving age - Driving test theory questions - Driving theory test - Driving lessons - Bsm
Revolutionary France, however, overturned this practice as part of its sweeping social rethink. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left handed his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.

From then on, any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire was thus left hand and any part colonised by the French was right hand.

In America, the French colonised the southern states (Louisiana for instance) and the Canadian east coast (Quebec). The Dutch colonised New York (or New Amsterdam). The Spanish and Portugese colonised the southern Americas. So The British were a minority in shaping the 'traffic'.

The drive-on-the-right policy was adopted by the USA, which was anxious to cast off all remaining links with its British colonial past

Once America drove on the right, left-side driving was ultimately doomed. If you wanted a good reliable vehicle, you bought American, for a period they only manufactured right-hand-drive cars.

From then on many countries changed out of necessity.

Today, the EC would like Britain to fall into line with the rest of Europe, but this is no longer possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything round.
The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967. While everyone was getting used to the new system, they paid more attention and took more care, resulting in a reduction of the number of road accident casualties.

From September 2009 Samoa now drives on the left instead of the right.
The main reason for this is that they want to use right-hand-drive cars, for instance from Japan and New Zealand, which both drive on the left.

Countries that drive on the LEFT include:-

Clifford Repotski, 24, of 1319 Ellis Woods Road, was arraigned on the charges Feb. 18 and his bail was set at $25,000, 10 percent, after he was taken into custody for the charges.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Pottstown Detective Heather Long and Montgomery County Detective Mary Anders, Long began an investigation into the ownership of 15 electronic storage discs which apparently contained images of child pornography that were abandoned at 411 East Moyer Road. Long learned that Repotski lived at the address, where he rented a room for approximately two years.

Repotski allegedly abandoned property at the residence, the discs among items that were found after Repotski moved out of the residence at the end of 2010, court papers indicate. When Long viewed several of the 15 discs, she located "numerous" images that she believed to be child pornography.
Court records indicate Repotski has no prior criminal record in Pennsylvania.
A preliminary hearing for Repotski is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. March 1 before District Judge Thomas A. Palladino.

So essentially Khaddafy has the entire country, including it's military, against him. If he truly intends to fight to the death, he'd better make it epic. Walking out of his palace to face an angry mob, and pulling out dual-wielded ak-47's.

I predict shit will go down exactly like the end of scarface, shot for shot. Either that, or die in hand-to-hand combat against Jean Claude Van Damme.

Samsung Galaxy S II: 1GHz Dual-Core, Super AMOLED Plus

One of the worst-kept secrets of MWC this year -- the Galaxy S II -- is finally official, and we'd say it definitely lives up to its name as a proper successor to the original Galaxy S that lit the Android marketplace on fire last year. Major (and largely expected) features include a 4.27-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8 megapixel primary camera with 1080p video capture accompanied by a 2 megapixel cam up front, Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0, integrated NFC support (on some versions), and a shell measuring just 8.49mm thick, making it likely the thinnest smartphone ever to roll off an assembly line -- in fact, it's over 0.2mm slimmer than the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc's thinnest point. <del class='bbc'>The biggest news here, though, might be that Sammy's going with an NVIDIA </del><del class='bbc'>Tegra 2</del><del class='bbc'> core -- the same as the LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix 4G, and Droid Bionic -- despite the fact that its own </del><del class='bbc'>Exynos 4210</del><del class='bbc'> was just announced for March production</del>.

Update: We were originally told that the Galaxy S II would be using an NVIDIA Tegra 2 SOC, but have been informed that was incorrect -- the phone will indeed have a Samsung chip, and quite possibly the Exynos.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: Honeycomb on Tegra 2.

Geez, it's been a long weekend of almost incessant Galaxy Tab II teasing, but the time has come: Samsung's finally releasing the official details of its 10.1-inch, Android Honeycomb tablet to the world. Contrary to the leaks, the tablet is called the Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- grabbing its moniker from the screen size, obviously -- and like the rest of the upcoming Android 3.0 tablets it's powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, will be available with 16GB or 32GB of storage, and has a front-facing 2 megapixel camera as well as a 8 megapixel imager around back. That's just the tip of the iceberg, but we've got the nitty-gritty too -- find specs, full impressions and even some video of the slate in action after the break! Oh, and don't forget to stop by the galleries below to see the new Tab 10.1 up close and then face off with Sammy's original Tab, not to mention the Apple iPad.
